The University of NSW is regarded not only as Australia’s leading research university in the dynamic field of quantum computing science but also as one of the global leaders in the race to build a quantum computer. The CQC2T Expansion Stage 4 project was the latest UNSW initiative to focus attention on the University’s progressive research, doubling their current capacity and attracting the best global experts in the field of quantum computing.

Located in one of the original teaching and administration buildings at the UNSW Kensington campus, this project refreshed the space to the most advanced quantum computing research facility in the country. The project involved the conversion of 650m2 of teaching space into ISO6, ISO7 and ISO8 clean room labs to accommodate dry cryogen free dilution refrigerators suites. These suites included highly specialised research equipment, that require tightly controlled conditions to operate effectively and Electron Beam Lithography (EBL) systems.
The project scope included the supply and
installation of:

  • A completely new mechanical services system including: 4 chillers; 4 air handling units; vacuum exhaust system; Hepa filtration; Munters dehumidification systems and fume cupboards.
  •  Building Management System (BMS) and automatic/manual control systems, including integration to UNSW Campus Building Automation and Control System (CBACS).
  • Process services system including: 2 process chillers; ultra high purity process cooling water reticulation
    system; life safety system; laboratory gases including high purity nitrogen, oxygen and helium; Milli-Q DI water systems.
    • A complete failsafe electrical system including: 550 kVA generator with a 150Kw load bank; 300 kVA UPS system and bypass switch panel and switchboards with a backup time of 20 minutes; 4 distribution boards;
    EMR shielding of the entire UPS room and cable trays; 4 separate earthing system pits; earth conductive flooring.
    • Dual fire detection system including both dry fire detection and early warning Vesda system.
    • Isolation slabs over 900mm thick to ensure accurate instrument readings.
    • Insulation of entire building shell to provide acoustic, thermal and moisture barrier.
