In 2018, the University if Wollongong (UoW) committed to reduce energy consumption by 20% over the next 15 years in an effort to invest in renewable energy and a sustainable future.
As part of the University’s innovative and sustainable Master Plan, INTREC were engaged to facilitate the design and construction of a campus wide Thermal, LED & Solar PV (TLS) Upgrade (totalling over 20 projects). This TLS Upgrade was one of the largest construction projects for UoW and comprised of several major mechanical upgrades, LED lighting retrofit projects and solar PV systems installed across a total of 19 buildings. The delivery of Stage 1 commenced in early November 2018 with the remaining projects of Stage 2 completed in early 2020.
Engaged under an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) model, Stage 1 included the installation of solar panels on 6 buildings, LED lighting in 8 buildings and thermal services in 6 buildings. The projects were completed in a live university environment over a period of six months.
Following the successful delivery of Stage 1, INTREC were awarded the Managing Contractor role for Stage 2 of the TLS project. Stage 2 included the detailed design of 15 projects, completed alongside the delivery of 3 Thermal, 4 Solar PV, and 4 LED projects.
The INTREC team had permanent residence at the campus, coordinating major building mechanical upgrades, LED lighting retrofit projects and Solar PV system installations. At the completion of Stage 2, INTREC had assisted UoW in reaching their goal of generating 1 million kilowatt-hours per year of renewable energy. This TLS upgrade marks a long-term investment into a more sustainable future at the University through the introduction of on-campus sustainable infrastructure.
