Extension Underway at Redlands IndigiScapes Centre

INTREC are well underway with construction works at Redlands IndigiScapes Centre in Queensland.

Redland IndigiScapes Centre has been operating as a highly popular environmental education facility and community space since its opening in February 2000, currently attracting around 40,000 visitors each year.

After nearly two decades of operation, some areas of the existing centre needed upgrading and refreshing.  This presented an opportunity to look at future opportunities and ways the Centre can be improved to better serve the community and share environmental messages.

In June 2019, INTREC partnered with Redland City Council to undertake the extension of an existing education/theatrette facility and the construction of a brand-new administration building. The Redlands IndigiScapes Centre Expansion project is an initiative of the Queensland Government.

The works consist of a unique platform frame held up by 83 bored piers, with the structure of both buildings comprised mainly of timber – a growing eco-trend within Construction industry.

The environmental focus is a particularly interesting and challenging aspect of the project as the site lies within a nature reserve. The upgrades have been designed in keeping with the IndigiScapes environmental focus and aim to retain the community spirit that has seen the centre become the success story it is today. In particular, INTREC’s building extension project has been designed to avoid and protect significant and veteran vegetation on site. During construction, a small number of trees will need to be removed near the main building. This will be done under strict environmental processes and will be offset by new plantings.

With the project wrapping up in December 2019, the Redland community can look forward to new and improved opportunities to use the IndigiScapes Centre facilities.
